Manage Asset Tags
In Tenable Vulnerability Management, asset tags are composed of custom categories and associated values. For example, if you want to group your assets by location, create a Location
category with the value Headquarters
. Note that this definition of tag is more specific than the more general usage of "tag."
You can use tags to categorize or group assets. Vulnerability Management does not support using asset tags to define custom attributes for individual assets.
You can assign a tag to assets manually, or you can create dynamic tag rules that Vulnerability Management uses to automatically assign the tag to assets.
When managing asset tags in Vulnerability Management, keep in mind the following limits:
Name | Object | Limit |
---|---|---|
Tag categories | category | 100 per Vulnerability Management instance |
Tag values | value | 100,000 (default) If your organization wants to change the total tag limit, contact Tenable Support. Note that individual tag values cannot exceed 50 characters in length. |
Tag rules | and /or objects in the filters parameter of a tag value | 1,000 per individual tag value |
Tag rules | comma-delimited values in the value parameter of the tag value | 1,024 per individual tag rule |
Request | Body | 1 MB total |
To manage asset tags:
- Create asset tags that reflect your business context. You can apply a tag to assets manually, or you can create dynamic tag rules that Vulnerability Management uses to automatically assign the tag to assets. To apply tags automatically, use tag rules.
- Assign tags to your assets. This step is optional if you create rules to apply tags automatically.
- Maintain the tags you've assigned:
- Correct asset tag assignments.
- Update an existing tag.
- Delete a single asset tag.
- Delete multiple asset tags.
- Delete an asset tag category and associated tags.
- List all asset tags, assets for a specific tag, or tags for a specific asset.
Note
When you create or edit a tag rule, Vulnerability Management may take some time to apply the tag to existing assets, depending on the system load and the number of matching assets.
